r/china_irl isn't really a good introspective on the lives of your average Chinese person, it's mostly frustrated young edgy middle class boys. Besides, we aren't locals, and we'll never have a local experience, even if we fully integrate and speak the language, some things that affects them will never affect us (and vice versa). It's a country of 1.4b people, it's simply impossible to generalize everything: with such a population even if 2% wanted to (damn thats a bad slang lM) that would already be more than half of Canada's population. Even if it's a minority, it's still a damn loud minority
This is inherently a silly debate because it's a fully personal one, if China is working for one person then why change it? In the same vein, if China isn't working for another person by all means go ahead and emigrate outside. These are not mutually exclusive things and both can coexist at the same time inside the same country, it's not a hard concept to grasp

Agreed. It's a lack of conceptualising another country like your own. I'm from the UK. I know a lot of British people who hate it and a lot of people who love it. It's not that different from any other country. It's amazing how many people can't comprehend this.
I know people who have had a perfectly fine life here in China and then they get one racist remark from some drunken idiot and then they immediately think that all people have this underlying racial issue, but they just don't express it. You've hit the nail on the head, people don't see China as just another country. Whenever China is brought up, be it in a good light or a bad light, it's always portrayed as some distant eastern otherworldly entity. It's impossible to discuss anything about China without carrying some heavy political baggage, even if it's completely unrelated or unnecessary.
This leads to people always looking at China as black and white, it's either heaven or hell, no in-between. But the real world obviously doesn't reflects this at all, and when they discover this obvious truth their brains short-circuit when they have to extend their views beyond the most simplistic version possible

I always say that most Chinese have an inaccurate (certainly incomplete) conception of the US. But most Americans have no conception of China.
Countless millions have immigrated from China to the US and Western world. Millions more have studied and worked abroad. The net effect being that your average Chinese is at most one or two degrees removed from someone with direct first hand experience of the US.
In contrast, the average American doesnt know a single person whos actually been to China. China to them is just the Great Wall, Pandas, Com...ism and Chopsticks.
This lack of conception puts all of China into the realm of imagination only. And created as you say, a non-country. China is not a real place to them. It is a permanent, fantastical, living contradiction: ancient and modern, com...stic and capitalist, fake and real.

The typical Westerner isn't educated enough on China. For example, many American 'com...sts' are on XHS fantasising about what China is like according to their own understanding of Com...ism and not the reality. They think China has all these social programs and workers rights and everything because that's what they read Com...ism is about in books. lol
I also notice how many Westerners will treat China as 'the others over there'. It's kind of difficult to put in words. Like the lone kid who sits on their own in class all quiet and doesn't talk with anyone else unless necessary such as group projects. Most people will judge them by the clothes they are wearing and how they behave in class but nobody knows what they do after school or much about their personality.

Ive been living in Korea for quite awhile and am looking to go to China later this year. I can tell you the same thing happens with foreigners here. In the old days it was blogs about how great it was, how beautiful, the food, the coffee shops, the mountains. Then it was YouTube vlogs, and now I suppose its TikTok with the same bullshit, but I refuse to download that brain rot on my phone. (I wont even watch YouTube Shorts). Amid all that praise for Koreas wonders, the country has the highest suicide rate in the world, the lowest birth rate, sky high rates of alcoholism, enough patriarchy to choke a goat, huge gender pay gap, growing wealth inequality, high youth unemployment, mountains of debt, a real estate bubble that could burst anytime, a government in crisis, a growing incel problem, and people dying to find a way out. But the 24-yr old recent college grad teaching a year or two at a Korean training center sees or experiences none of that. For her, its oh my god, guys! Look how cute this little pastry is I got from the coffee shop! Look how beautiful the Korean traditional clothes are!
So, same as it ever was.

My guess is foreigners have a better experience in China in general. Most are language teachers, which is often very well paid with a lot of holidays and free time. The cost of everything is much cheaper than Europe/USA, its also safer and public transport is usually much better... So they can have a more convenient lifestyle, afford to travel, eat out often, save money, rent a decent apartment... Also the Chinese are usually very friendly and hospitable with foreigners, and dating is also usually really good, especially most men eventually get married with a local.

Aye of course life is great if you earn like 2x-3x or even 4x the local average, also because wage bonus for teachers is much smaller in most other countries. And China is indeed quite nice, modern, safe and convenient if you can pay for it.
Meanwhile you also have plenty of posts here titled Can I survive on this? with replies like awful low-ball offer/youll live in poverty because they got offered what is basically the typical local wage.
And then they wonder why many local Chinese want out. They must be poorly informed!

Totally true. The average Chinese person has just as much struggles as the average person in the West like buying a house and car etc. Foreign tourists from the West also have it good given how weak the RMB is compared to the Euro, USD, and GBP etc. But the money you earn in China is still not worth much when you go back home. I remember a friend earning less than 120k rmb a year working a university in China a few years ago telling me that what they earn in China is considered below the poverty line in Texas even though it was considered a decent salary in China at the time.

China irl is just rich Chinese who think the West is some liberal freedom paradise. The grass is always greener types, most of them have been to the West on some expensive holiday or fully funded student years, had a great time and think that's usual life. They love to say China is some dystopic hell hole while they sip milk tea and shop for expensive clothes and go partying. Horrific lives.
They're very annoying in real life, especially the way they suck up to foreigners. It's pretty fun seeing their face drop and confusion when you tell them you like living in China.

I might be able to shed some light on this indirectly.
I'm an American. Sick of America right now. So I've signed up for a lot of Social Media in Asia. The main draw is that I can't understand any of the comments nor understand when someone is speaking about politics.
(This is the part that may help) All I see is the beauty in their social media BECAUSE I don't speak the languages.
I see the cultural dances.. I see the tattoos.. I see the cosplay... I see the architecture... I see their nature... I see all these great and wonderful things. But someone could be live streaming and asking for help because the government is actively breaking into their home to take them away for leaking about illegal dumping and I wouldn't have a clue.
So if you get on social media for a language you don't speak... the language barrier creates a "filter" that makes things seem SO much better.

this is exactly what ive been thinking. tons of people can see all the best sides of china with little to no knowledge of social systems, customs, attitudes, without knowing how to see through propagandized media so you are totally correct. soon enough, as americans and Chinese interact, the wow they have subways and healthcare is going to fade. reality will set in. america sucks in a lot of ways. china sucks in a lot of ways.

Yes of course, thats social media around the world. Just pointing out its not simply outsiders romanticizing and actual Chinese wanting to gtfo. As someone whos been here a decade, social media isnt wrong about safe, clean cities, well run public transit, and Chinese who are very welcoming

As a Chinese I think its common.
If you want to have a trip. China is a good place. Because here has many different kind of attractions and cultures, good infrastructure, very low crime rates and cheap living expenses (compared with us and eu).
But we are workers . We have to make money for living , children adapting and education. On the other hand we have a big population, that makes the job market and any other fields very boiled(We call that“卷” ). So we should work with 995 to keep our job, the students have to study from 7 am until 9pm or later to get the chance of a not bad school for getting job easier in the future. Its tired and tough to live here as an ordinary person.
