I don't like the choice of the word "chosen". It implies that us mere mortals in any country actually had a choice in how history unfolds itself, which is a very scary thought that makes you wonder how bad we must be collectively at making choices given how constantly brutal and occasionally beautiful our history is.

Correct me if I'm in error, but the PI was the only host nation that had the US pay a lease, (rent), and yet the PI never allotted a single peso to their defense budget to fund the US presence on their soil. In Europe, host nations' defense budgets in part funded the US installations, South Korea and also Japan carry the financial burden. The PI oh well it's a different story.

This is like putting a foreign military base at the border of their own country. If it was Philippine's own military it is different but those are foreign military bases.

Marcos Jr., or Bongbong, who was already made a governor under his father's rule, fled to the U.S. (on a U.S. Air Force plane no less) with his family having committed the greatest theft from a government (a record that could be found on Guinness World Record website until they removed it shortly before Bongbong's 2022 election) and, after his return to the Philippines a few years later, not only was he able to gain enough support for political office, but he's now the president!??
Perhaps there is no similar idiom as the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in the Philippines but, nevertheless, it's still remarkable how people could be manipulated into voting for someone who they in their right mind shouldn't even have considered..

Why do they want to have this family back. Methink Bong Bong is serving the people with some kind of American agenda in the contested S.China Sea. If it is for livelihood, settle disputes on the discussion table with more Asean/Asian mannerism and mentality, instead of branding US show of force and deciet.

That was a very educational and thoughtful conversation that Philippinos and Americans should listen to about the geopolitics of the Philippines and its relationship with the US. Bottom line: The Philippines has once again become a colony of the US. If there is a major conflcit between the US and China. You can bet that Chinese missiles are aimed at these US bases. It is highly unlikely the Chinese would invade the Philippines, so the US narrative about training the RP military for an invasion by China is a red herring.
Obviously the American narrative of the RP being a bastion of democracy is a false narrative for American consumption. Anna pointed out a good point about democracy. For the Marcoses to maintain power, they need to move to a parliamentary form of government which is the political mechanism of most European countries. It is the western narrative that parliamentary governance is democratic. If the popular election of the nations leader is the guiding principle of democracy, it obviously is a faux banner to maintain the power of the elite. Even the US democratic system suffers from this variance in that it is the political party that chooses who wil represent their party to run for president and votes are tallied at the state level by preceints to represent their vote at the electoral college. It is NOT a popular democracy, but one of representative democracy that does not necessarily reflect the will of the people.
And, yes, when Trump takes office, it will be an interesting time for the Philippines. However, Trump has lined up anti-China warhawks to implement America's foreign policy. What Trump says does not reflect his implementation of his cabinet. Given that, the chances of a conflict with China will be even greather as the Congress seems to suffer from the same disease.
In the meanwhile, China has set in motion, geoplitical and economic measures to stunt any US military attempt to cause conflict. BRICS is forming a cartel of energy and mineral rich countries, BRICS is creating an alternative to the dollar and SWIFT for international trade which will neuter the weaponizing of the dollar.
US involvement in Ukraine and Israel are depleting America's military arsenal. We see that in its selling of obsolete weaponry to Taiwan and a placid MIC who's production is still at peacetime levels. If Trump enacts the tariffs he claims he will do, the US will domestically collapse as inflation grips the consumer economy and we will follow the EU into a neutered economic power unable to sustain any sort of military power, same as the EU.
