I have been to several cities in China, and now it's time to go to rural China. So, what's rural China going to be like? Because they don't want you to witness the real life there which is better than rural US.

I just came back from China very recently. Went to Lijiang, Dali and Kunming. They have beautiful views. There are McDonald's, Starbucks or KFC in pretty much all Chinese cities/towns. There's a nice Chinese tea franchise/shop called Chagee. Almost everything is cheaper in China compared to in Western countries. The only 'downside' of rural places is the public toilets are usually squatting toilets. A lot of people smoking too. Otherwise the air is usually clean in small cities/towns. I also like their modern cities such as Shanghai. The metro/ subway system is impressive. Modern hotels are very nice too.

I think the Chinese gov start preserving historic places after 80’s, developing tourism areas like other countries do.

I believe the rural China is not as some media describe but this place is more like an attraction refurbished for tourism so not exactly the raw rural area. More safe and clean. But the old house rebuilt as hotel is good, stunning views I’d love to live in, same idea as you live in those refurbished huts in Chiangmai.

My family had visited HuangLing several years ago, however, the vilage was getting more and more crowded ever since, perhaps its better for foreign tourists to drop by avoiding the China's long vacations. yet it is still a great place to explore,the village is also famous for its Autumn sceneries to many traditional Chinese painters and photographers.
btw, there's a little valley called "ShiMengxia"(石門峽） near the HuangLing resort, which has breath taking beautiful scenery for its crystal clear creeks and blossom canyon.
-A tip for the local food: the local food in Jiangxi province is very spicy and Hot for many western foreigners, if you are exploring the local restaurants, you may ask the chef to make the dishes "wei la"(mildly spicy,微辣），which may possibly help you out

This is a typical touristic area like many others in China. It is indeed a beautiful place and it is remarkable to see the efforts done by the government in order to develop the life in rural areas. There are many old villages that had been transformed in such areas. For example the Huangshan area in Anhui. However, the "real rural China" is very, but VERY different than what we see here with you and the Barrets. Trust me, I live in a small village at 40 KM from Hefei.

To be honest, China 30-40 years ago was very bad economically, but due to its rapid developments, China now has transformed from a poor backward country to a new superpower, most people of the world dont believed it, I myself either…until a visited the country. I think China now is fast becoming a developed/industrialized country(if not already one), eventhough it’s GDP per capita is still low(not a high income country yet), but…its not correct when we use the over rated USD to calculate the GDP, China is keeping it’s currency low to has export advantage, Chinese family(both incomes)make $20,000/years can live very comfortable life in most medium cities,because things are cheap there, while American households income of $20,000/years is considered poor, living a miserable life even in a small towns.
