After 14 years working as a lorry driver in the UK, Zsolt Gabor hung up his keys at the end of March and went back to Hungary for good.

Conditions had become unbearable during the coronavirus pandemic, which along with the effects of Brexit has left Britain at least 90,000 truck drivers short, manifesting itself in growing supply chain problems.

Gabor said the shortage of drivers, and problems trying to find a flight back to Hungary because of pandemic restrictions, effectively meant his final shift in the UK lasted three months with only the mandatory minimum breaks. He was never off for more than 45 hours.

At the height of the pandemic that meant his lorry’s cab was his home. The final straw came when a policeman ordered him back into his truck citing lockdown restrictions. “I was not even allowed to take a walk at the end of my shift,” he said. With a bad back and a family waiting back in Hungary, Gabor decided he had had enough.

Logistics UK, the trade body for hauliers, said Britain had a chronic driver shortage for many years, but the problem was now acute. Industry leaders have called on the government to add heavy goods vehicle drivers to its shortage occupation list, which would give foreign hauliers an exemption from post-Brexit immigration rules that bar them from being hired.

The government has not completely ruled out taking action but late last month Kwasi Kwarteng, business secretary, wrote to business leaders urging them to hire UK-based workers instead, pointing out that foreign labour offered only “a short-term, temporary solution”.

Even if an exemption was granted, it seems unlikely many of those that have left the UK will return so readily. The Financial Times has spoken to dozens of eastern European HGV drivers who used to work in Britain but have gone elsewhere to work.

Many cite similar tales of poor working conditions for quitting but other reasons include poor wages compounded by a tax reform, known as IR35, that prevented most drivers from operating as limited companies, resulting in a significant cut to take-home pay.

Add to that Brexit. For truckers, that meant endless paperwork, including customs procedures they were never trained for and queues at the border. Other issues included the need to take UK driving exams that many truckers did not have the language skills for, along with a more hostile attitude to foreigners in Britain.

Moreover, Europe as a whole is short of truckers. “It is a global driver shortage across Europe, not an isolated problem of one country,” said Zsolt Barna, chief executive of Waberer’s, one of eastern Europe’s largest hauliers based in Budapest.

For the EU drivers that have left but still have the right to return and live in the UK, the prospects of higher pay that some UK companies are now offering was not enough. Many said they had already found work elsewhere on higher wages and in a better working environment.

Peter Kovecs, another Hungarian, lasted two years in England. After inheriting his family’s farm he came to the UK to earn money to reinvest in the business and had planned to stay for longer. But after his experience he said nothing would tempt him back.

“They bullied us while the drivers kept coming,” Kovecs said. “Now they are begging us.” Once he had saved £60,000 he decided to go home even though that was below the target he had set himself. “I will never go back. I like England, it’s a great country, I will take the family there one day, but to work, the way they treat people? Never again.”

But on his return earlier this year he was refused entry and deported due to a mix-up over his right to work in the UK, known as EU settled status. The ONS also found that 50,000 UK-based drivers had left the profession since the pandemic began, mainly those over 45. “My hypothesis is that these older drivers had been stood down during the pandemic, or were isolating from Covid-19, and then realised they didn’t want to come back to it at their age,” he said.

The problems with the UK haulage industry are many, not just the lack of drivers but also the general conditions that have been forced upon the industry. Stupid stuff like the way that trucks are generally discouraged from parking overnight in places such as industrial parks, almost zero proper facilities that are always full to bursting leaving you to park in busy laybys where again they're discouraged from parking. No one wants them in their area, where are they supposed to go? If the government got off its useless arse and actually built some proper facilities for the drivers to use off the motorways - services are always chockablock too - then this would alleviate some of the issues. Truck drivers are looked down upon in this country whereas in countries like Spain etc they're respected and welcomed with open arms to good facilities and into restaurants that are happy to have their patronage. This country is a nightmare to drive in and being shunned in most places does not make the job any more attractive. Industrial parks want deliveries, sort out parking for the drivers with facilities, want to attract new blood into the industry, sort out the hours and facilities. It isn't too hard a thing to sort out, where you can make a decent wage without spending your life on the road to the detriment of the rest of your life. It's a hard job and there are ways it could be made easier for those coming into it and for retaining those thinking of leaving it, but it costs money, requires changes in drivers hours and an increase in the cost of goods to cover it. I don't know but I certainly can't see the current shower of clown shoes we have in Westminster making any meaningful impact on the issues that the industry faces, look at their track record.
I did a few weeks with a mate driving an artic round France and Spain and the difference in facilities to the UK is amazing. Specific places to park up with some great food, cafes and even a brothel once which we accidentally found ourselves in!
It's still hard work but it lessens the impact of being in a cab all fucking day.
Therein is the difference, makes the job a whole lot more palatable. The other major difference in driving on the UK and on the continent is the volume of traffic. The UK is just crazy at times and the slightest incident and the whole lot grinds to a halt. Don't get me wrong, there are some horrific jams and queues abroad but not at such a frequent rate as happens in the UK. Hell I've been in 72 hour border queues before but these were accepted and known delays, in the UK, it is the constant problems and stresses of driving here that make the job so much harder.
When I read more and more about Brexit it makes me think that Britain’s fate will be death by a thousand cuts as opposed to one big thing. Lordy drivers are a huge part of the machine and if the machine breaks down then we all ultimately suffer. There’s no replacement parts for such a well oiled machine by the sounds of it. Is there another historical example of a country like a Britain isolating itself so much?
When I read more and more about Brexit it makes me think that Britain’s fate will be death by a thousand cuts as opposed to one big thing.
Yes, absolutely, this has been clear for years. Economists always warned of a slow and unstoppable decline ...
There is no basis in either theory or practice for a successful Brexit.
I don’t wish to cause panic buying, but looking at the gaps on the supermarket shelves, it might be wise to think about stocking up early for Xmas.
No need to go nuts but getting a few non perishables in, say, early November might save you a lot of hassle.
Yeah..... we're already preparing for a early December cut off point for Xmas deliveries this year... last year is was early than normal because of covid logistics problems, but economy is seeing September delivey issues this year already So we are braced for the worst.
Im happy that I stocked up for Brexit, just in case. I'd never actually had a "pantry" of food and staples before. All I do now is put what I use on the shopping list, and the month or two of food and necessaries is always there.
Fresh fruit and veg is dodgy...no tangerines. White wine is absolutely gone from my local shop, but fortunately I had white wine on the list of "necessary to be stocked up on" list.
Brexit - Less choice at more cost.
I don’t wish to cause panic buying, but looking at the gaps on the supermarket shelves, it might be wise to think about stocking up early for Xmas.
Stock up on what though - pasta?
If you don't want turkey you can probably freeze a few roasting joints, but if you want turkey you'll have to wait (maybe do the sensible thing and pre-order).
If you're desperate for sprouts you might be able to get frozen ones, but is it the end of the world if you make do with something else? It's not like people only eat vegetables at Christmas, so I find it hard to believe there won't be anything suitable to eat in late December.
Sure, people should spread out their shopping so they're not trying to fill a whole car up on Christmas Eve, but that's common-sense.
Time to pay British workers with decent wages and decent conditions then. I see no issue here.

So the nursing and teacher shortage could have been fixed a decade ago but it wasn't because....??
Teachers and nurses are largely employed by a single employer whilst truck drivers can apply to multiple openings and take the best offer.
Not really. Industries are very good at clamping down on wage growth and likely orchestrate wage suppression collectively. Add to that the right's decade+ PayCap which, because of the scale of it impacted wages across the economy and still does.
Voters had multiple opportunities to tackle that stumbling block to improve salaries and labour shortages in key areas of society but rejected it at the ballot box repeatedly.
I find it curious. Brexit is presented as a magic bullet to cure all ills. But these ills could have been ended 10 years ago. It's amazing how Teflon Tories operate. They're never held accountable for anything, and applauded for some minor side-effects of their chaos and uncertainty. The electorate in return behave like an entitled parent who mismanages an out-of-control pissed, stoned and chaotic teenage child.
The lack of lorry drivers is not a problem to you?
It’s more than possible to improve drivers wages and conditions without needing to kick out all the foreigners. If your solution to poor wages and working conditions requires kicking out all the foreigners then I suspect improving wages and conditions is only a secondary consideration.
If you have an over supply of cheap labour why would business improve conditions and pay?
There is nothing inherently wrong in HGV drivers operating as self employed independent contractors. Operating that way is NOT " a loophole". The problem with the new application of the rules is that the responsibility of deciding who is an " independent contractor" has been bounced onto fearful employers and HR departments. The Treasury does not like or understand self employment.
The truckers demonstrated that they are not employees by leaving
The UK is the 21st Century's Uganda.
lol.
That's a pretty good example of how a government driven by ideology can seriously harm itself.
