Reverse engineering recipes - While I don’t usually follow recipes precisely, I will do that when I first try cooking something now. I also put a lot of energy into figuring out exactly how a recipe is made and what is the point of each step. I am really fascinated with the alchemic aspect of cooking (turning ingredients into delicious food). When I have extracted this information from a recipe, I will be unlikely to ever again follow it precisely. Instead, I will add what I learned and add it to my improvisation repertoire.
Zero wasted food policy - While I allow myself to improvise freely, I don’t allow myself to waste food, ever. It it turns out unpalatable, it’s on me. So I man up and eat it nonetheless. This helps teach myself culinary responsibility as well as training my palate to what combinations don’t work, so I can avoid them. To keep this fair and avoid food upsetting weaker stomachs, I reserve my daring experimentations for when I cook for myself, and my more successful concoctions to when I cook for others.
Feeling the ingredients - By training my palate and my smell over many experiments as described above, I started getting a feel of what works and what doesn’t. Which ingredients can be combined effectively and which ones just won’t work. I favor pure ingredients for the most part (no processed crap), and I put a lot of attention in cutting up all the ingredients very uniformly and in the right size to create the right textures and chew.
While I do enjoy cooking and eating a lot, I don’t enjoy spending too much time on the kitchen everyday, since it will keep me away from the computer and make me very prone to procrastinate and overeat (I work from home).
I’m quite alright with eating the same food a few days in a row, so I’ll usually cook outrageous portions that I will sometimes recombine into new experiments in the subsequent days.
These days, I’ll often resort to cooking stews and soups in massive pots and roasting stuff in the oven across multiple trays of mostly pure ingredients (that I can recombine in different ways to mix things up a little).
With me, It’s not usually a matter of “which recipes do I want?” but more of “what ingredients in my body asking for, and which types of food do I feel like having and/or preparing”?

I DO cook food at home. I have too many food photos in my mobile.
One of the pitfalls of this pandemic induced WFH culture is that the lady of the house has to prepare food for the men 4 times a day. So - in order to partially relieve my mother of the stress, me and my brother have taken charge of the kitchen for the last 2 years. Of course- this goes without saying that none of us had prior knowledge of working in the kitchen department apart from boiling water and boling milk..;-).
However- in the last couple of years, both me and my brother have managed to cook pretty well. So here are some sample photos- jointly made dishes by me, mom and bro…;-)
Breakfast dishes:
Personally- I love preparing breakfast items. Here is the very simplest of breakfast items I had made today morning.
Do I stop with breakfast items alone?. No. I specialize in rice related dishes- like biriyani, fried rice, pulao.
The only thing I cannot make properly is roti/ chapatti. Because I dont have the time to knead the dough and then roll it out into a circle. I can make an oblong chapattis, which will not look like a perfect chapatti at all.

I usually don't get much time at home to cook lovely foods. Every day foods are just for survival purposes and not for pleasure. It's a perfect day and perfect time for me to answer the question as tomorrow is Sunday, a no work day and today's dinner I just cooked and I just had my lunch.
I just had a wonderful dinner. Washing all the dishes is really pain in the a**.
I also often make chinese like fried rice, noodles, szechuan chicken blah blah etc etc. I learned to cook chinese food which exactly tastes like restaurant foods.

My wife and I split cooking but I do most of it since I work from home most days
I worked my way thru college as a prep cook at a restaurant. It wasn’t fine dining but we made almost everything we used except ketchup and mayo. That means I have learned good knife skills and I don’t get intimidated by the kitchen.
My wife is a great self-taught cook. She has a better palate than I do. But, I cringe when she uses a knife and I assume a lot of knowledge that she needs to look up in a cookbook. Mostly that just makes her slower in the process but she always gets to a good result.
When I have time I let my 7 year old help in the kitchen. He likes to make pancakes, cut fruit and vegetables and the basics. I would consider it an unforgivable parenting error if he left my household unable to cook a proper dinner.
Everyone should be be able to cook.

In my home I’m usually the cook.
Until a few months ago I was the cook 90% of the time but now that we moved to Pavia (in an apartment part of a farm nearby the town) my wife feels more sure about herself and she started cooking more.
I still cook 75% of the time but she started not only cooking Tex-Mex stuff (she’s Texan) but Italian recipes too (her Carbonara is awesome and she cooks an incredibly good Risotto with Strawberries).
We both clean, but usually who cooks do most of the cleaning.

I lived different part of the country and tasted almost all kind of food, but then i have realized the best food for me which i made it for myself.

Being a guy I wouldn’t like to repeat the dish if I’m getting control over kitchen. I always like to cook something aromatic rich flavoured stuff with basic ingrdient as chicken, I like to make my own recipes which can excite my taste buds upto some extent so recently I made a dish called ‘lemonila chicken’ which had turned out to be the coolest thing I have ever made.
Coming to usual dishes you better ask your children what they would like to eat in vegetables so that you can make veg dishes on week days and can go for non veg on weekends

We rarely have hotel food when we're home. It's just on very special occasions when we feel like having something that we just can't prepare at home because we don't have the right ovens or the ingredients.

Ours is a very traditional Malayali kitchen and we prepare normal traditional Kerala food. It's mostly vegetarian. I started to cook when I was 13. At that time, it was just simple dishes. By 22, I was able to manage a day's meal all by myself.

Cooking is one thing which I hate the most, but I do it because my husband loves homemade food.
Initially, when I was newly married, for almost 2 years, me and my husband use to eat outside, at least twice a day. This was creating an impact on our health without even realizing it. I started gaining weight and my husband use to feel tired throughout the day. This was also creating an impact financially.
One day, over the weekend, my husband requested me to cook and this is when i realized that he was missing homemade food. I cooked for him throughout the week. I use to wake up early and prepare breakfast and lunch for us.
After a week was over, I decided to push myself for another week and then a month. At the end of the month, my husband jokingly said, “this month, even during the month end, I am rich”. I asked him why and he replied, “as you cooked throughout the month, I didn't spend even a single penny outside”.
This went on and after a couple of days, I was telling him that cooking at home is financially so inexpensive. He told me, “rather than cheap, it's healthy. When we use to eat outside, most of the nights, I use to have a burning sensation in the chest and stomach upset was so common". I felt guilty for whatever I did.
From there on, I started cooking regularly.

I am super passionate about food. I love eating food. I love eating tasty food and above all, I love feeding people. I believe that to show someone how much I love them, I’ll say it by cooking food for them :). I started cooking 20 years back. When I was a child, I used to observe when my mother cooks. I never asked, read, or saw any recipe when I started to cook.
I think you measure with your eyes and when your tongue can feel what you eat, your eyes will proportionally tell you how much of the ingredients you need to add. However, to become a better cook, I also started to read and follow blogs of others who were pro.
When I cook for myself (mostly after work), I cook simple meals. However, if I cook for others, I elevate my cooking. I thoroughly enjoy feeding people. To fill someone’s stomach is one of the best things!
I also got introduced to Masterchef Australia show by one of my flatmates recently and that show inspired me to also try international cuisine. I have now tried many dishes from different parts of the world.
I love doing dishes after cooking. So, whenever I cook, I also leave the kitchen clean :).

Sometimes I cook after work, but it's always something quick. I keep a list of different types of meals I've cooked in the notes section of my iPhone. That way, I don't have to think up something to cook, which is usually the hardest parts.
Most of the time, I cook 2–3 meals for the whole week on Sundays, and put them in containers. I can sometimes expand those items to make something new. For example, mashed potatoes I made with a pot roast can be made into potato pancakes/latkes as a weekday side, or weekend breakfast.
Also, if I make tacos, I'll make a lot of the meat filling and freeze a portion of it and write the date on the freezer bag. At a later date, I can thaw out the meat in the fridge while I'm at work and heat it when I get home for dinner.
If your kids are at least around 12 or so, you can teach them to cook a few simple meals like spaghetti and meat sauce with salad, tacos, or quesadillas. My kids are 14 and 12, and a couple of months ago I declared every Saturday as Kids’ Dinner Saturday. They decide the menu, give me the list of items they need from the grocery store, and they cook dinner. I told them I don't care what they cook, as long as it's a balanced meal.
Though I started this because I hate cooking on Saturdays, for some reason, it has actually ended up being a win-win: I get a break from cooking, and kids are learning to hone their own skills at food planning and preparation.

I love cooking. I used to stay alone and now I stay with my partner but cooking part is always done by me. I love spending time in kitchen. Thats is relaxing time for me. Some people think, cooking is waste of time but we all live for food, the what is wrong in spending time for cooking. It’s an art and give satisfaction.
