I was a student in South Korea for the majority of my life, and I can say with complete certainty that life in South is indeed very very hard.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as bad as the neighbor to the North, but it’s still pretty hard.
Hell Joseon is a term used by many young South Koreans, referencing the hardships and problems of South Korea. (Joseon is the name of one of the former kingdoms in Korea’s history)

1. Extreme Competition
The KSAT is without doubt, far harder than the SAT, and students study for it for years. In fact, so many people fail and retake this test, that there are special Campus-Academies that make you focus only on the test and nothing else.
Take a look at this bridge, nicknamed “Bridge of death”:
Yet, even if you enroll into the best universities of Korea, it is extremely hard to get a job. Why? Cause you need more than that.
And the thing is, everyone is extremely good.
The first big rise in 1998 was the Korean IMF crisis (the oligarchs blamed it on the people).
The second rise in 2002 was a credit card disaster (the politicians blamed it on the people).
The third is in 2008 which you guys already probably know about.
Korea has the highest suicide rate of any OECD country, and it’s constantly increasing. In fact, there was a real suicide that happened about 6 years ago in one of the cram schools I used to go. But it didn''''t really shake the reputation of the academy because they''''re so common anyways. The rumor spread for a while, and then it just stopped.

Korea has the second longest work hours in OECD while having significantly lower pay than other countries. There is even a popular term called Passion Paying, which refers to the low amount of pay that people get, usually excusing it by saying “you’re passionate about this job, right? So I don’t need to pay as much money”.
Just 2 years ago, the president known as Park Geun Hye was impeached. About 20% of the entire Korean population participated in a series of protests.
They went extremely close to the Blue House (Korean version of White House) and successfully forced her into trial. This was a historic moment in preserving Korean democracy, and showed how united citizens can be, but on the other hand, it proved how terribly corrupt politicians were.
The CEO of Samsung went to jail, and after much investigation, it turned out that even more companies were deeply involved, like LG and NEXON.
Rich people getting shorter sentences, getting released early, politicians acting rudely to the common people, heck, even everyday customers abuse employees.
Korea has historically been a Confucian state, but there are many concepts in fundamental Confucianism that are not good like
-gender-specific jobs and sexism
-absolute obligation to authority and seniors
-child-abuse level of assault can be neglected
-extreme conservatism
As a result, the Korea suffers from many social problems relating to this.
All males, and only males are required to serve in the military for 2 years. And even worse, they need to serve in one of the most important stages of your life: When you’re supposed to go look for a job right after you graduated, or is currently in university.
This is why women actually have much higher employment than men in the 20’s, and has a crushing advantage over all men.
This doesn’t look so gender-equal does it? Well, it''''s not.
And speaking of gender…
A very large portion of feminists in Korea are very….. radical and have caused many problems on the excuse of “gender inequality”. But the truth in Korea is that legally, there are more advantages of being a girl (no military service), and although women might be subject to social sexism, Korea is starting to take a more progressive view on gender equality…that was, until radical feminists caused an extreme hate on feminism in Korea recently.
I am a feminist by definition because I believe in gender equality. But most “feminists” in Korea are closer to female chauvinists.
Womad (not to be confused with WOMAD music festival) is a very infamous “feminist” community/website in Korea, and
1. It’s official stance on the LGBT community is hatred.
2. It supports Park Geun Hye just for being a woman
3. Stated “All daughters should kill their fathers. They’re all sexist bast*rds. We support the kill-the-father project.” One member of the community actually worsened her father’s heart disease in an attempt.
4. It’s official stance is misandry.
5. It is officially fascist.
6. Staged sexual assault in order to insult all men.
7. Insulted all Musli... based only on religion.
8. Illegally took pictures of nude men in shower rooms or bathrooms and uploaded them on the website for public insulting
9. Disgraced and vandalized the Korean flag.
10. Defame military personnel and completely opposes a policy to compensate for the sexism, saying that it is unfair because only men get drafted.(btw, women can volunteer for the army too)
and many more.
To learn more on Womad, see the Wikipedia page. Womad (website) - Wikipedia
Korea is a pretty racist society, discriminating especially against Southeast Asian people and African-Americans, as well as many Indians.
Departments stores typically (although not always) favor Caucasian people over even Koreans, and tend to shower them with all the service and deals, while non-Caucasians get…squat.
This originates largely from a Korean “pride” that all Koreans are one, pure race, and throughout history, it has been considered disgraceful to mix blood with other races.
Also, through rapid economic development, Koreans got a sense of pride that they are a “Developed country”, and therefore superior to developing countries like the Philipines and Vietnam.
One example of racism is the fact that most English teaching academies explicitly say “We are looking for white people.” when hiring. Also, a study found that students and parents prefer white English teachers over non-white teachers despite having the same skill.
This is based on my observations while visiting South Korea (Seoul) multiple times in the last few years.
It''''s easier when you are rich. But, it''''s everywhere in the world.
Based on that, life in Korea is truly amazing. I live in the UK and we can only wish for the quality of some of those things in here.
Materialism: From what I could observe, materialism in Korea is brutal. The race after bigger, shinier, more wasteful cars, phones, flats, clothes etc is present everywhere. Flashy, big car seems to be the ultimate goal for some Koreans, no matter what the expense. They don''''t care to kill the nature and history etc to achieve it. Choose between the park or shopping mall? Shopping mall always wins in Seoul.
